For several years I've been really into stickers as a fun way of distributing art and have made thousands of my own to give away. I have always wanted to expand my sticker-making into acting as a sticker "label" of sorts, to put out limited releases of other people's artwork. With the sponsorship of UnityLA, a community organization dedicated to increasing the quality of urban life through collaborative projects, my multimedia company Tleilaxucore is releasing a sticker set featuring art from 8 different artists based in Los Angeles. Much like a compilation cd that a record label might release, this set showcases a single design from each artist professionally printed on a black and white weatherproof vinyl sticker, all contained within a packet which will be distributed to attendees of the event.
Outside of street art, it is quite uncommon to see stickers used as a stand-alone medium by visual artists. I find stickers to be an excellent vehicle for distributing art for art's sake, rather than being relegated to merely a promotional tool as is often their fate. The simple, functional form of a sticker is highly accessible to people who enjoy decorating their personal space with artistic imagery. The enjoyable experience of receiving a miniature artwork from an artist, combined with the ease of use and wide variety of possible decorative locations, reinforce the sticker as a unique, if under-utilized, tool at the artist's disposal.
The release of this set aims to provide a fun collection of imagery for the purposes of artistic decoration to those who attend. The artists themselves receive an additional quantity of their own sticker to distribute themselves as they see fit. As a long-time fan and proponent of stickers, I wanted to provide other artists with the opportunity to have their art on stickers which can be given away at leisure. As the amount of complete sticker sets are limited, they can only be guaranteed for the first 100 people in attendance!
