Dum Dum Zine presents Write/Shop.
Want to take a writing workshop, but can't dish out the 500 clams? Into experimental writing? Need a prompt to get started? Just plain tired of lonely writing nights? This workshop, which is the first of many in DUM DUM's "Tour of L.A." monthly workshop series, will take care of all those writerly ailments by bringing artists together, juicing them up with ideas, and collaborating. The workshop will also provide the opportunity for people to draw and craft as well, so long as it's related to or responding to the act of writing. The only requirement: bring a piece of your old work that you'd like to cut up and throw into the communal inspiration jar, and also bring any object that inspires you.
"At its core, there are plenty of sad songs and waltzes which have a melodic and lyrical directness befitting their origins as Ryff’s solo work. They flesh them out to swoon with dramatic grandeur and earthen rusticity behind Ryff’s plaintive words."
"Piano and guitar provide the main propulsion, and the precise, nimble lines of Young and Cimini add real depth and richness. Plus when was the last time you heard a rock band where every song gave prominent roles to bassoon and viola?"
"Big orchestrated pop songs about [my] transitory life, depression, love, food service, and trying to function without a twitter account. Kind of like the Brill Building re-imagined, or Carole King via Serge Gainsbourg."
Claire Cronin is an artist who makes songs, performances, poems, and visual work. She has done collaborative performances, experimental theatre pieces, and workshops at The Hammer Museum, LACE, the Experimental Meditation Center, Telic’s Public School, Public Fiction, and many other alternative art spaces across Los Angeles.
